Day 5

My last day :(
I spent my last day with Dallas Morning News by going to the JCPenney annual stockholders meeting at their corporate offices. I was picked up at around 8:45 am and was then sent with a erporter to JCPenney. It was very interesting seeing a meeting about fashion, which is definitely something I am interested in. I met the CEO's and other very influential business people and had a lot of fun. The meeting ended and I went home around 11:00 am.

Day 4

Today was so much fun (but also very busy and tiring...) I got to meet so man influential people! I was picked up from my house by a reporter at 8:00 am, ready for my day to start. We then drove to Fort Worth for the Annual Shareholders Meeting for Radioshack. I listened in and met many people during this meeting who were very gracious and kind.

I returned to the office at about 11:00 am and ate lunch with reporters who gave me some advice for writing, school, and and my future. I then returned upstairs to the Business section where I preceded to make more "did not say" calls and business calendar fact checks. I was then brought to an editor's meeting at 3:30 pm where the Sunday paper was planned and talked about. I loved being a part of their conversations!

One of the most interesting and thought provoking parts of my internship was spent after the meeting at about 4:00 pm where I learned about the Dallas Morning News iPad app with the creators. I personally would not want to be in the technology field, such as creating apps, but it was extremely interesting to watch them create pages and fix glitches on the app with their own computers right in front of me. I learned about code and what entails someone to do what they did.

My day ended with more phone calls and I left the office at 5:00 pm.

Day 3

Thinking about everything that was fit into my schedule today is exhausting...I arrived at the office at 9:45 am and got started on "did not say" calls as well as calling businesses from the list to fact check their information for the monthly business calendar. (All after some coffee of course!)

I then met with a staff photographer at 11:00 am to shadow her on an assignment. We went down the street to City Hall where the Annual Police Memorial Ceremony was taking place. She shot photos and I aided her as a reporter from The News interviewed families and policemen. This assignment really meant a lot to me to be a part of, for I am incredibly interested in photography as well as journalism and writing.
Afterward, at 1:00 pm, I was picked up from City Hall by a different reporter who covers restaurant stories. She took me to the company, "Hail Merry" which is an all natural, gluten-free, vegan food campany.  Their products are sold in whole foods and we got to watch the production of certain goods. It was so interesting learning about this company and they even gave me samples of all their snacks that they make.

I arrived back at the office later that afternoon around 3:00 pm and worked on my calls until around 5:00 pm. At 5:00 pm, i joined the page editors and learned how headlines are made, edited, and put together. It was so interesting! at 6:00 pm I joined the team that lays out the pages and watched the newspaper for the next morning pull together. I left at 7:00 pm.

Day 2

Today was even busier than yesterday and turned out to be such a learning experience! I really felt as though I was making an impact as I worked on various projects in The News. I arrived at the office at 9:45 am and was sent immediately to check in with Laura Jacobus at the Business section. As she got organized for her day ahead of her, I continued to make "did not say" calls for the Problem Solver column by Katie Fairbanks.

I was then sent to the Points page meeting at 11:00 am. Here, I met more people that are a part of The News and got to listen to what will be included onto the Points page this coming Sunday and why. The graphic designer for Dallas Morning News was present at this meeting and showed his collage that he made specifically for this story. After the meeting, I shadowed him as he taught me what he does for the newspaper and showed me some of his masterpieces that have been published.

After the meeting, Laura had me watch as she explained how to edit pieces. She organized what story will go on what page and then went through and read the stories given to her by the people she is responsible for within the Business section. After the tutorial, at 1:00 pm, I was sent to lunch! Afterward, I attended a Business editors meeting as well as a Business department meeting. The meetings were productive and laid-back, I really enjoyed sitting through them and meeting more influential people that have a career that I would dream of having.

As Laura worked thoroughly to finish editing, I continued to make "did not say" calls for Katie Fairbanks.  (One person cried to me as they explained their problem..awkward..) As I finished up that task, I was also set to work by calling businesses to fact check on the information we had on them for the monthly business calendar featured in The News. I left the office at 5:30 pm.

Today was a lot of work but I really enjoyed it all, I'm learning a lot and am growing to love the newsroom. Can't wait for tomorrow!

Day 1

I was so excited to begin my week with Dallas Morning News! Today at 8:30 am, I met with Cheryl Hall, who is a columnist for the business section, and a fellow senior from Hockaday carrying out her senior project this week as well. We were then driven downtown and learned about Cheryl's career working as an intern, turned reporter, turned columnist at The News.  Just listening to Cheryl rave about working and exclaiming that she would rather work in the newsroom then her home made me anxious to see what it would be like.  We then met many influential editors and columnists in the business department. Afterward, I sat down with Cheryl as we talked about my interest in journalism and why I should pursue my passion at Dallas Morning News.

After receiving a tour of the different newsrooms and studios, I attended the business editors meeting with my mentor, Laura Jacobus, at 9:45 am. I was taught how the business section works, what is published on certain days, and that mistakes do happen...(the meeting centered on the fact that due to a printing error, the same page 5D was printed in Saturday and Sunday's copies of the News).  The deputy business editor, Janie L. Paleschic, then brought me to her office and pitched me one of her ideas for a story to be carried out on the 10th anniversary of September 11th. She wanted to get my ideas and opinions in what the article should focus on and if she should interview people my age and younger to get a different perspective on the manner. I voiced my opinions and she said that I was very helpful, which meant a lot to me.

I then was sent to a different newsroom to the Problem Solver column. I was introduced to countless people (many whom I don't remember their names...) I did get the opportunity to meet and talk to Steve Blow! I read his columns and felt as though I was meeting a celebrity. ...And then I was set to work! The Problem Solver column solves people's problems who call in and complain about an issue. The calls have backed up to March, so I was given a sheet of names and numbers and told to call people back to get all the details of the problem, so that the staff writer of Problem Solver, Katie Fairbank, can have the potential to print the solved problem in the paper.  I made phone calls and took notes until when Laura and Cheryl treated me to lunch at 12:30 pm.

After lunch at 1:30, Cheryl took me on an interview and photoshoot! The interviewees were Jeff and Rick Kurz, who founded Kurz Group, Inc (a company that provides property tax services). I got to watch the entire interview and even ask a few of my own questions on record.  We then ventured outside where I aided the photographer in shooting pictures of Jeff and Rick for the story.

At 4:30, the day ended and I was sent home which was upsetting..I'm loving every aspect of journalism and the newsroom! I can't wait for the rest of the week!
