Today was even busier than yesterday and turned out to be such a learning experience! I really felt as though I was making an impact as I worked on various projects in The News. I arrived at the office at 9:45 am and was sent immediately to check in with Laura Jacobus at the Business section. As she got organized for her day ahead of her, I continued to make "did not say" calls for the Problem Solver column by Katie Fairbanks.
I was then sent to the Points page meeting at 11:00 am. Here, I met more people that are a part of The News and got to listen to what will be included onto the Points page this coming Sunday and why. The graphic designer for Dallas Morning News was present at this meeting and showed his collage that he made specifically for this story. After the meeting, I shadowed him as he taught me what he does for the newspaper and showed me some of his masterpieces that have been published.
After the meeting, Laura had me watch as she explained how to edit pieces. She organized what story will go on what page and then went through and read the stories given to her by the people she is responsible for within the Business section. After the tutorial, at 1:00 pm, I was sent to lunch! Afterward, I attended a Business editors meeting as well as a Business department meeting. The meetings were productive and laid-back, I really enjoyed sitting through them and meeting more influential people that have a career that I would dream of having.
As Laura worked thoroughly to finish editing, I continued to make "did not say" calls for Katie Fairbanks. (One person cried to me as they explained their problem..awkward..) As I finished up that task, I was also set to work by calling businesses to fact check on the information we had on them for the monthly business calendar featured in The News. I left the office at 5:30 pm.
Today was a lot of work but I really enjoyed it all, I'm learning a lot and am growing to love the newsroom. Can't wait for tomorrow!
